Frequently asked questions

Which formula is most accurate for ideal weight?
No single formula fits everyone. Broca is the most well-known but can be less accurate for very short or very tall people. Devine and Hamwi were developed for clinical use and are generally more robust. It's best to use the range from all four formulas as your reference.
Is ideal weight the same as normal weight?
Not exactly. Ideal weight describes a target body weight for optimal health, while normal weight typically refers to the BMI range of 18.5–24.9. Ideal weight usually falls toward the lower end of the normal weight range – but muscle mass, bone structure and age all play a big role.
Why do the formulas give different results?
Each formula was developed in a different era and for different purposes. Broca (1871) was a simple clinical rule of thumb, while Hamwi (1964) and Devine (1974) were optimised for drug dosing calculations. The variation shows that 'ideal weight' is not an exact number – it's a range.
