Four established formulas are compared:
- Broca (1871): Men = height (cm) − 100; Women = height (cm) − 105. Simple and widely known.
- Devine (1974): Men = 50 + 2.3 × (inches over 5 ft); Women = 45.5 + 2.3 × (inches over 5 ft). From clinical pharmacology.
- Hamwi (1964): Men = 48 kg + 2.7 kg per inch over 5 ft; Women = 45.5 kg + 2.2 kg per inch over 5 ft. Widely used in clinical settings.
- Robinson (1983): Men = 52 + 1.9 × (inches over 5 ft); Women = 49 + 1.7 × (inches over 5 ft). A more modern clinical refinement.
The healthy range is formed from the minimum and maximum of all four formulas.
